What Is Drive Impact?

Drive Impact (DI) is a high-risk, high-reward offensive tool in Street Fighter 6. When activated (HP+HK), your character performs a lunging attack with a glowing aura. It has super armor (can absorb one hit) and, if it connects, triggers a Wall Splat (if close to a wall) or a Stun (if already in Burnout). Mastering DI is essential for breaking through defensive play and punishing predictable opponents.

1. Use DI to Punish Recoveries

After knocking your opponent down, time a Drive Impact as they get up. Most players will press a button or try to reversal; DI's armor will absorb the hit and launch them into a wall splat. This is especially effective against Dragon Punches and other reversals.

2. Cancel Your Pressure into DI

When you have frame advantage, you can cancel a normal move into DI to catch the opponent pressing buttons. For example, Ryu's cr.MK into DI is a common frametrap. If they try to jab or use a special, the DI will armor through and confirm.

3. Use DI as a Read Against Fireballs

Many fireball characters rely on zoning. If you predict a fireball, you can Drive Impact through it and get a full combo. But be careful—if they throw a second fireball or quick recovery, you might get punished. Mix up your approach with jumps and parries.

4. Go for Wall Splat Combos

After a successful DI that wall splats, you have time to dash up and land a max damage combo. Each character has specific routes. For example, Juri can do st.HP > f.HK > LK Tensenrin > SA3. Practice your character's optimal wall splat combo in training mode.

5. Burnout Management

Using DI consumes two bars of Drive Gauge. If you whiff or get blocked, you lose that gauge and risk entering Burnout (no Drive abilities, take extra chip damage). Don't spam DI recklessly; save it for key moments.

6. Countering Opponent's DI

If you see an opponent's DI coming, you have several options:

  • React with your own DI – This clashes, both players bounce back, no damage.
  • Parry (MP+MK) – A perfect parry will stun them, giving you a free punish.
  • Jump over – Many DIs are linear; jumping can avoid it and leave you in advantage.
  • Backdash – If you have space, backdash to avoid and punish whiff recovery.

7. Drive Impact in the Corner

When your opponent is in the corner, DI becomes even deadlier. A successful DI will bounce them off the wall, allowing a follow-up combo. If you're the one cornered, be extra cautious—one DI can cost you the round. Use neutral jump or ex DP to escape.

8. Mix Up with Raw DI

Sometimes, using DI from mid-range with no setup can catch opponents off guard. This is called a raw DI. Good players will expect it, but if your opponent is too focused on footsies, a well-timed raw DI can lead to a wall splat. Use it sparingly.

9. Drive Impact and Mental Stack

Effective DI usage is about mental stack. If you constantly threaten throws, low attacks, and overheads, adding DI to the mix forces the opponent to guess. If they guess wrong, they eat a full combo.

10. Practice the React

To improve at countering DI, set the training dummy to randomly perform DI. Practice reacting with your own DI or parry. Over time, your reaction speed will improve. Remember, DI has a 26-frame startup (including 11 frames of armor), so you have time to react once you see the glow.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using DI too predictably—every knockdown or after blockstring.
  • Forgetting that DI can be armored through projectiles but not multiple hits.
  • Getting baited by a Drive Reversal that costs two bars to push you back.

Mastering Drive Impact will elevate your Street Fighter 6 game. Remember: high risk, high reward. Use it wisely, and you'll dominate the competition.
